How to Wash and Care for Wool Knitwear
Wool knitwear is one of the most durable and beautiful natural fibres you can own — but it does need a little extra care to stay looking its best for years to come. At Ekta Helsinki, we believe that caring for your garments is one of the most sustainable choices you can make. A well-maintained wool piece can last decades, reducing the need to buy new.
Why wool care matters
Unlike synthetic fibres, wool is a living material. Its natural crimp and lanolin content make it naturally odour-resistant, moisture-wicking, and temperature-regulating. With the right care, your Ekta Helsinki knitwear will only get better with age.
How to wash wool knitwear
Hand washing is always the gentlest option. Fill a basin with cool or lukewarm water (never hot — heat causes wool to felt and shrink) and add a small amount of mild wool detergent or baby shampoo. Submerge your garment and gently squeeze the water through — never wring or twist. Rinse thoroughly with cool water until the water runs clear.
If you prefer to use a washing machine, always select the wool or delicate cycle with cold water and low spin speed.
Try steaming — our favourite Ekta method
At Ekta Helsinki, we love steaming our knitwear as an alternative to washing. A good steam not only freshens the garment but also helps it return to its original shape — the gentle heat and moisture relax the fibres beautifully. It’s quick, effective, and much kinder to the wool than a full wash. We reach for the steamer between wears and recommend it as your first go-to before considering a wash.
Drying wool correctly
Never hang wet wool — it will stretch out of shape under its own weight. Instead, gently press out excess water (don't wring), then lay the garment flat on a clean dry towel. Reshape it to its original dimensions and leave it to air dry away from direct sunlight or heat sources.
Storing your knitwear
Fold wool knitwear rather than hanging it — hanging can cause shoulders to stretch over time. Store in a cool, dry place. To protect against moths, use cedar blocks or lavender sachets rather than chemical mothballs.
Dealing with pilling
Pilling is a natural characteristic of wool, especially in areas of friction. It doesn't mean your garment is low quality — in fact, it’s a sign of natural fibres doing their thing. Use a wool shaver to gently remove pills and restore a smooth surface.
How often should you wash wool?
One of wool's great advantages is that it doesn't need frequent washing. Thanks to its natural antibacterial properties, airing your knitwear between wears is often enough — and steaming is a wonderful way to refresh a piece without water at all. Wash only when genuinely needed — this saves water, energy, and extends the life of your garment.
Caring for your Ekta Helsinki knitwear is an act of slow fashion. The longer your pieces last, the smaller your wardrobe’s footprint — and the more beautiful your collection becomes over time.
